Salarjung Museum, Hyderabad

Story behind this photo

Salarjung museum in Hyderabad is the result of one man's passion for collecting rare and antique artifacts. Salar Jung III(1889-1949), the prime minister to the Nizam of Hyderabad spend 35 years and almost entire life's earnings in collecting such priceless articles from all around the world. It includes this famous doubles sided sculpture of Mephistopheles and Margaretta at the back. They are the characters from German masterpiece drama - 'Faust' - by Goethe in 1808. The haughty figure of Mephistopheles represents the evil spirit and the gentle and graceful Margaretta represents the good spirit. It was carved by an unknown French sculptor in the middle of 19th century.

The sculpture of Mephistopheles and Margaretta is a example of artistic marvel. Creating a double sided sculpture needs a lot of skill. This sculpture perfectly combines the features of the gentle Margaretta and the haughty Mephistopheles.
